Just Like You Said Dad
Synopsis: Just Like You Said Dad takes a look at the self-esteem of a young boy and how it can be altered and destroyed by the words his father chooses to use when he disciplines him. These words become part of this child and changes his life forever.
Technical Notes: Just Like You Said Dad was created as part of a 24-hour Dogme Film Challenge put on by the Independent Filmmakers Co-operative of Ottawa. Part of this challenge was to film all your scenes in one 24-hour period. Also all editing was to be completed in camera so I was not able to edit the film at a later date. I wasn't even able to view the film until the night of the screening. When I came up with the idea to make this film I had envisioned scratching the film as I shot it. The areas that I did not want scratched were marked with tape after they were shot and once the entire film was photographed I then took the film into a darkroom and scratched the film using a nail. I would skip past the areas that had been marked with tape leaving them untouched. It was this challenge that directed me to experimental filmmaking and to creating the technique of manipulating film prior to photography.
