Cures What Ales You
Synopsis: Beer & Liquor: it makes you strong, it makes you handsome and it makes you feel good; at least this is what the breweries and wineries want us to believe. However, alcohol can have other effects as well, especially on our bodies and minds; it can destroy your life and turn it upside down.
Technical Notes: Cures What Ales's You is my second film and it deals with my own battle with alcoholism. I was young when I started to drink and was well into my sickness before the age of 17. I wanted to reveal the harshness of this sickness through the film's texture and contrast so this is why much of the film has been manipulated in some form or another. Much of the scratching to the film was done prior to photgraphing my images. I took the unexposed film stock into a dark room and scratched the emulsion with sandpaper. I then photographed my images over top of the scratched emulsion. I use this style of experimentation becasue of the uncertainly that I am left with and not always knowing what the results from the experimentation will be, much like the uncertainly an alcoholic deals with each time they pick up a bottle.
